Recap: Late goal by Mainoo lifts Man United to 3-2 win over rivals Liverpool

Manchester United’s young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo scored a late winner to secure a thrilling 3-2 Premier League victory over Liverpool FC on Sunday, ensuring the home side’s return to the UEFA Champions League after a two-year absence. Liverpool fought back strongly in the second half, with goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo cancelling out United’s early advantage. However, Mainoo had the final say, firing in from the edge of the box in the 77th minute to spark celebrations at Old Trafford.

United had taken control early on, with Matheus Cunha opening the scoring in the sixth minute before Benjamin Šeško doubled the lead shortly after. Liverpool’s comeback began just after halftime when Szoboszlai capitalized on a mistake by Amad Diallo. Gakpo then equalized after a costly error involving Senne Lammens, who passed directly to Alexis Mac Allister, allowing Gakpo to score into an empty net.

The result lifts United to third place with 64 points and three matches remaining. Liverpool sit fourth on 58 points, level with Aston Villa, who still have a game in hand as the race for Champions League qualification intensifies.

Old Trafford erupted on Sunday afternoon as Manchester United produced a gutsy, clinical performance to beat Liverpool 3–2 in a Premier League clash full of drama, comebacks, and a decisive 77th-minute winner that sent the home faithful into delirium.

United were not to be denied, however. A 77th-minute goal — arriving just moments after a double substitution shook up the game — proved the winner, sending Old Trafford into scenes of jubilation and condemning Liverpool to a damaging defeat in the race for Champions League places.

Despite Liverpool dominating possession at 61% to United’s 39%, it was the hosts who carved out more chances, firing 17 shots to Liverpool’s 12. The counter-attacking threat of Cunha, Šeško, and Mbeumo tormented Liverpool’s backline throughout, while Bruno Fernandes controlled the tempo in midfield.
